The April issue of the Women in Iran magazine reported that the death sentence issued on October 26, 2002 to a man who beheaded his daughter was commuted to three years imprisonment.
The report, published on womeniniran.com said: "Nabi, a 34-year-old addict man living in the suburbs of Ahvaz, killed his 7-year-old daughter Maryam last August [2002] based on never-proved-to-be-true confessions of the girl to her father, declaring she had been sexually abused by her young uncle. Nabi put a pillow on the Maryams's head, cut her throat with a knife, put the head in a plastic bag and surrendered himself to the police. The girl was announced virgin after examinations conducted by the Coroner's Office.
"Hashemi Shahroodi, the head of Iran's Supreme Judiciary Court, recognized the murderer as 'Corrupt on Earth,' a conviction classification in the Iranian Islamic law punishable only by execution. Shahroudi gave permission to the sitting judge to issue the death sentence against Nabi. However, according to the murderer's sister's declarations, the Islamic Republic's Supreme Court put aside the death sentence last month [March], and instead the judge in the case convicted Nabi only to three years of imprisonment.
"According to the law in Iran, a father will not be executed due to murdering his child and as punishment he will be put in prison for only three to nine years depending on the severity of the crime. Murder-for-honour behaviour is a common phenomenon in the Middle East, North Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan, Turkey and Iran. "
