The Campaign for Custodial Justice and Abolition of Torture has called for repeal of all detention laws, including the National Security Act, saying preventive arrests are tantamount to torture. The fist State-level Convention on Custodial Justice and Abolition of Torture, held on October 11, also resolved to request the Government to abolish all forms of torture and ratify the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading treatment or punishment. It wanted the death penalty to be done away with as "it violated several international instruments." In his message, the former Supreme Court Justice, V.R. Krishna Iyer, said people everywhere must struggle to support the cause of humanity in its opposition to custodial injustice and affirmation of abolition of torture and death penalty.
