The China Youth Daily reported that a leader of a village in Hebei province was sentenced to death for trying to kill a man who defeated him in a village election. Pang Zhenling and his hired hitman were both sentenced to death by an intermediate court in Cangzhou. Pang tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to rig his rival's car with a bomb, before resorting to hiring someone else to do the job. However, the hitman shot his intended victim's wife instead, severely injuring her.
