The City Council of Greensboro, by an 8-1 vote, passed a resolution urging a moratorium on executions in the state, whose death row is the fifth largest in the nation. Greensboro became the seventh municipality in North Carolina to pass such a resolution since mid-1999. In September, the Charlotte municipality, the largest in he country, had adopted the measure, introduced by Rod Autrey, a Republican city councilman, who is a supporter of the death penalty. But even in reiterating that support, Autrey urged the Council to approve the resolution favouring a moratorium on executions in North Carolina. "It's apparent to me that those with little resources are not going to get the same treatment as others," Autrey said.
