the Court of Cassation in Jordan annulled the death sentence of Ziyad Karbouli, suspected of being an al-Qaida member. The judges decided that the Court of State Security committed a mistake in not accepting the request to determine the accused’s psychiatric competency. Karbouli confessed on state television in May 2006 that he killed a taxi driver, Khalid Dosouki, and took part in the kidnap of two Moroccan diplomats. Later, Karbouli retracted the claims saying he confessed under duress.
