The Freedom Union Deputy chairman Vladimir Mlynar believes that Europe might resume a discussion on the introduction of the death sentence in the future and that the Czech Republic should take part in it. He stressed, however, that if a vote on the abolition of capital sentence was held he would not vote for the abolition. Later Mlynar told CTK that although he would not vote for the abolition of the death sentence this did not mean that he would vote for the death sentence. The idea of the Czech Republic renewing capital punishment was absurd, he said, but added that Europe would return to the discussion on its meaning. Deputy Premier and Justice Minister Pavel Rychetsky (Social Democrats, CSSD) said that the abolition of the death sentence was based on the fact that a judicial mistake cannot be ruled out one hundred percent and most advanced countries had thus abandoned the death sentence. The Czech Republic had committed itself to abolish the death sentence in international conventions and it had taken this step, Rychetsky said.
