The German government said it hoped to deport a Turkish-born Islamic fundamentalist leader after he completed his sentence, provided Turkey gives assurances he won't face the death penalty.
Muhammed Metin Kaplan, the leader of the Cologne-based Islamic State organization, faces high treason charges in Turkey, German Interior Ministry spokesman Rainer Lingenthal said. The crime carries the possibility of a death sentence, which usually bars deportation under German law.
Turkish authorities blame Kaplan followers for a planned 1998 kamikaze attack on the mausoleum of modern Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Kaplan, nicknamed the "Caliph of Cologne", has served two-thirds of a four-year German jail term for incitement to kill a rival. A federal court recently rejected his final appeal against the sentence.
