The government effectively blocked any future attempts to bring back the death penalty in Slovakia by approving a proposal to ratify the protocol No 13 [concerning the abolition of the death penalty] to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. According to the Justice Minister, Jan Carnogursky, this puts an end to any future attempts to reintroduce the death penalty in Slovakia.
The country's prosecutor-general, Milan Hanzel, endorses this opinion. According to him, any future attempts to discuss the reintroduction of the death penalty will only serve as a means of entertaining voters.
