The governor of India's southern state of Tamil Nadu commuted the death sentence imposed on Nalini, a main defendant in the 1991 killing of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, to life imprisonment. The former premier was killed by a woman suicide bomber in an attack blamed on ethnic Tamil rebels - a charge they denied. The clemency pleas of the other three death-row convicts Murugan, Perarivalan and Chinna Santhan, accused of the same crime were rejected.
