The House unanimously approved a package of reforms that would require more evidence in capital cases be provided to defense attorneys, bar the executions of anyone with an IQ of 75 or lower, and give judges and the Supreme Court greater authority to set aside death sentences deemed unjust. "This is a good bill and something we need to do in the state of Illinois," said House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego), lead House sponsor of the legislation. The bill approved Friday by a 117-0 vote also would establish a pilot program for police to videotape interrogations and allow for police who fabricate statements or evidence in capital cases to be decertified. The bill goes back to the Senate for consideration of House amendments, where it is expected to pass next week.
