The Indian Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence awarded to four men convicted of killing 15 people at a wedding party in a village in Punjab's Amritsar district in 1991 to avenge their humiliation at the hands of the bridegroom's father. A Bench comprising Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice B N Srikrishna snapped the last legal thread on which the lives of the four hanged as it dismissed their petition which was filed after their regular appeals were dismissed by the apex Court. Rejecting the plea of the accused for mercy, Justice Balakrishnan, writing for the Bench, said that out of the killed persons "one was a seven-year-old child and three others were at the threshold of their lives being aged between 15 and 17 years". "The entire incident is extremely revolting and shocks the collective conscience of the community. The acts of murder committed by the appellants are so gruesome, merciless and brutal that the aggravating circumstances far outweigh the mitigating circumstances," Justice Balakrishnan said.
