The Inkatha Freedom Party, expressing outrage about yet another alleged rape of a child, called for a referendum on the return of the death penalty.
The party's Gauteng spokesman, Dlangezwa Mvelase, said that a referendum should be held to "get the people of South Africa's stamp of approval on the death penalty".
Mvelase said that his party was outraged by the alleged rape of an eight-year-old girl from Orlando West, Soweto. A 24-year-old suspect, believed to be from Zimbabwe, was arrested.
