The Kenya Human Rights Commission released a report on the Human Rights situation in the country stating that there had been more than 1,500 cases of violence and human rights violations reported countrywide in the first three months of the year. The commission also quoted death sentences as one of the worst forms of human rights violation with at least 21 people sentenced to death in January and 24 others in March, making a total of 55, the number sent to the gallows in the three months. The report stated that in 2001, 134 people received death sentences despite the fact that no Kenyan had been executed since 1987. The report also stated that in the same three months there had been 31 extra-judicial killings by police in the country.
