The Kidnapping Act 1961 (Act 365) makes it mandatory for kidnappers on conviction to receive "death, imprisonment for life and shall, if he is sentenced to death, also be liable to whipping". In Malaysia the death sentence is mandatory for unlawful firearm possession. Section 121 of the Penal Code covers acts of treason and carries the death penalty, or life imprisonment upon conviction. Death sentences cannot be imposed in Malaysia on persons convicted of an offence if they are below the age of 18 (Section 16 of the Juvenile Courts Act 1947). In the period ranging from 1983 to 2000, 206 people, including 42 foreigners, had been executed in Malaysia for drug trafficking offences.
