the Kuwaiti Court of Appeals commuted the death sentence of Hajjaj Mohammed Adel Al-Saadi, who is also known as the ‘Hawalli Monster’, and sentenced him to life imprisonment in two of the 18 cases which have been filed against him. After the verdict was issued, Saadi’s lawyer Montasir Al-Zayyat, in Egypt, said the verdicts issued in the two cases are just a step in the right direction.
“However, the verdicts have not achieved our hopes and we’re going to insist on looking for the right culprit,” said Zayyat.
He added his argument in the court should lead to the man’s innocence.
Attorney Zayyat also said he still has a chance before the Court of Cassation when the case is expected to come up for hearing on Jan 20, 2009.
During a previous session, Zayyat told the court his client was arrested and interrogated illegally because there was no Public Prosecution warrant. He added the sample of semen was also taken from his client illegally because a security man has no right to collect such samples.
Attorney Zayyat pointed out Saadi had admitted to the charge under duress because he was in police detention for about a week before being referred to the Public Prosecution. Saadi was charged with two counts of child rape.
