THE MONSTER OF ROSTOV – I DID IT FOR LOVE

Andrei Chikatilo was executed in Ukraine in 1994. He was convicted of killing 53 people, mainly women, children and adolescents.
The story goes that Andrei was traumatized by the story of his brother Stepan’s death, supposedly killed then eaten by a hungry mob during a great famine that hit Ukraine in 1930.
There is no documented proof of the existence of the brother, but the incident was very real to Andrei’s mind and it led him to believe that he needed to atone for his brother’s death during the course of his own life.
He was married, the father of two children and working as a teacher, when, at 42 years of age, he perpetrated the first of his 53 murders. He cannibalised the bodies of his victims.
Before his conviction and subsequent execution, an innocent person was put to death for some of his crimes.
Andrei’s son, Yuri, in an attempt to emulate and vindicate his father, also practiced cannibalism and after his conviction was lynched by fellow inmates in a Russian prison.
Italian playwright and theatrical director Ugo De Vita, inspired by these events, has written a play, The Monster Of Rostov- I did it for love that will be showing in the Sala del Coro at 45, Via del Corso, Rome on February 16 and 17.

The play aims to provoke contemplation on the complex issue of the death penalty. Proceeds will sustain Hands Off Cain’s campaign for an international moratorium on the death penalty.
The event was realised in collaboration with the Associazione Nazionale Italiana Cantanti and is patronised by the RAI’s Social Secretariat.
The cast includes Emanuela Giovannini, Daniela Ialicicco and Teodoro Paterae. Diego Rivas Zerbo, Domenico Leva, Salvatore Arena and Luca Blasi will play selected pieces from J.S. Bach.
