The Ninth Criminal Department of the Supreme Court of Appeals upheld the death sentence for three persons convicted of murdering two people on behalf of the illegal TIKB, the Turkish Revolutionary Communists Union.
Adem Kepenklioglu, Turan Tarakci and Mehmet Hakan Canpolat, had been sentenced to death by the Istanbul First DGM [State Security Court].
The Ninth Criminal Department upheld the sentence on the grounds that it complied with procedure and law. Following the appeal process, the suspects will be able to ask for a correction of the sentence - also known as the extraordinary legal method - but, the request must be accepted by the Chief Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court of Appeals, which upheld the verdict.
The DGM had sentenced the three suspects to death in accordance with Article 146/1 of the Turkish Penal Code for "undertaking action by establishing an organization with the aim of changing the constitutional order through the use of force".
