The Northern Alliance defied the world and roared into Afghan capital Kabul
1 MIN READ
The Northern Alliance defied the world and roared into Afghan capital Kabul. Hours after the rebel forces marched in there were reports that captured Taliban fighters and supporters were being executed and businesses and aid centres looted.
In Kabul, the bodies of Arab and Chechen fighters loyal to Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban were strung up in trees or left in the streets. In a park, the bloody bodies of seven black-turbaned Taliban militia lay dead, apparently executed with bullets to the head. Bank notes were stuffed in their noses and ears and children spat at the corpses.
In Kabul, International Red Cross reported finding the bodies of 11 men - five Pakistanis and six Arabs - some with banknotes stuffed up their nostrils.
The Amnesty International Secretary General Irene Khan expressed concern about the summary execution of captured [Taliban] soldiers as the Northern Alliance reached Kabul. "Human rights abuses committed by the Taleban cannot be used to justify new abuses by the Northern Alliance; these killings must stop."
