The Ramkavar Azatakan Party of Armenia [RAPA] said it would support the abolition of the death penalty in the republic on condition that an exception will be done for the criminals who committed the terrorist act in the Armenian parliament on October 27, 1999.
RAPA leader Rouben Mirzakhanian said the strict position of the Council of Europe, which does not accept any exceptions in the issue of the abolition of the capital punishment, is incomprehensible. Mirzakhanian expressed his opinion that the CE in several cases is guided by dual standards. Thus, in several member-countries of the Council of Europe the death penalty has not been abolished yet, he said.
The leader of the RAPA stressed the necessity of Armenia's integration into international organizations but said that integration does not mean that Armenia has to give in to incomprehensible requirements.
