The Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court imposed the death penalty on Wang Hao, after convicting him of robbery and murder. Wang, who was released from jail in May 2002 after spending time for theft, was reportedly in need of money, so he targeted one of his relatives, an elderly man named Shao. On May 23, he brought a hammer and went to Shao's home on Quyang Road. While talking to Shao, he suddenly knocked the old man on the head with the hammer. While Shao was unconscious, Wang walked into the bedroom and assaulted Shao's wife. He then used a kitchen knife to cut their wrists and hit them on the head again to ensure they were dead. He left the premises with 1,500 yuan, a necklace and five cigarette cartons. He was caught by police at his girlfriend's house.
