The South African Prisoners' Organisation for Human Rights send a letter with an appeal to Botswana President Mogae, to commute the death penalty imposed on Mariette Bosch to life imprisonment. The Sapohr president Derrick Mdluli said in a letter that "The death penalty has not even been seen as a good deterrent to violent crimes, as has been proved in the South African scenario? We are saying that every criminal should get a sentence proportional to the offence committed. We think that in Botswana the same principle should be applied, since South Africa is their neighbouring country in the African continent". Sapohr also urged religious bodies and human rights activists to appeal to the Botswana government to end capital punishment.
