The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka, Bangladesh, awarded the death penalty to three leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of Bangladesh National Party, and sentenced five others to life-term Rigorous Imprisonment for the killing Sabekunnahar Sony, a Bangladesh student. Judge Shahed Noor Uddin delivered the 31-page verdict in a crowded court room, out of the three convicts who were sentenced to death, two were sentenced in absentia. Sony, a second year student at the University of Bangladesh, was shot dead in a cross fire when two rival groups of JCD had a gun fight on the university campus on 8 June 2002. The court awarded capital punishment to the gang leaders of both the groups and to a third person who directed fire upon Sony so as to capture a strategic fighting point on the campus. Those sentenced to death were Mushfiq Uddin alias Tagor, Nurul Islam alias Sagor and Mokammel Hayat Khan Muki. Muki had been absconding since the killing of Sony and Nurul Islam Sagor went into hiding after obtaining bail from the court.
