The speedy trial tribunal in Barisal, Bangladesh, sentenced eight people to death, six of them in absentia, after convicting them of murder

The speedy trial tribunal in Barisal, Bangladesh, sentenced eight people to death, six of them in absentia, after convicting them of murder. Those sentenced to death in court were Selim Kazi and Zakir Mridha.
The six others were Mamun Kazi, Suman Kazi, Kalam Mridha, Kuddus Mridha, Samir and Badal.
Judge Mohammad Abdul Matin acquitted five others as their guilt was not proved beyond doubt.
According to the prosecution, Zahirul Islam Zaheer, a counter assistant at the Patuakhali bus station, got into an argument with the accused over the amount they were due to pay.
On the afternoon of June 3, 1999 they chased Zaheer from the bus terminal and eventually stabbed him with a sharp weapon, leaving him behind fatally wounded.
Zaheer was rushed to Patuakhali general hospital where doctors declared him dead.
