The Supreme Court sitting in Ndola quashed the death sentence slapped on two unemployed men by the High Court and substituted it with a 20-year-jail term.
James Mwitwa, and Patrick Kapama's lives were spared after they appealed against both conviction and sentence.
Mwitwa and Kapama, both 29, were sentenced to death for robbing an Asian businessman of a motor vehicle and cash at gunpoint.
Armed with a firearm, the two robbed Valli Umarji of K5.4 million cash and a Toyota Camry worth K11.8 million on January 31, 1998.
In a judgement delivered by acting Supreme Court Judge Peter Chitengi, the court said the trial judge was incorrect in convicting them of armed robbery when the ballistic expert testified that the alleged gun could not fire.
