The top military court in Democratic Republic of Congo sentenced former military prosecutor Colonel Alamba Mungako and 10 other people to death in a murder trial.
Alamba was charged with the September 2003 murder of Steve Nyembo, the human resources director in the vast central African country's tax administration.
The High Military Court in Kinshasa sentenced another of the defendants to life imprisonment, while a thirteenth was jailed for four years.
Verdicts handed down by this court are without appeal, but civilians among those sentenced do have the right to go to the Supreme Court of Justice, a defence lawyer explained.
Nyembo was shot at his home overnight on September 28 last year and his body was mutilated and then burned.
The court acquitted six of the defendants, while the soldiers on trial were all cashiered.
Alamba was the chief prosecutor in a military court of order, one of a number of special tribunals set up by the late president Laurent Kabila.
These courts were abolished in April 2003 by his son and successor, Joseph Kabila.
