the Ugandan Court of Appeal in Kampala upheld the death sentence against a Kapchorwa primary school teacher for murder. Stanley Kurong, 44, a former teacher of Kapchesomola Parish Primary School in Kabtannya sub-county, was convicted by the High Court for killing a village mate, Sadiki Sukuku. He had, however, challenged the sentence in the appeal court, saying the trial judge did not properly evaluate the evidence against him. However, the court 'found no merit in this appeal. The trial judge rightly described the appellant as an 'inveterate liar'.' Justices Alice Bahigeine, Amos Twinomujuni and Christine Kitumba heard the case. In 2003, Gulu High Court resident judge Mary Engena Maitum found Kurong guilty of killing Sukuku whom he had accompanied to Gulu to buy a tractor. According to the prosecution, on May 21, 2001, while Sukuku was asleep in a room he was sharing with Kurong at Africana Bar and Lodge in Gulu town, Kurong cut him with an axe on the head and neck and vanished at 2:00am.
