The widow of Daniel Pearl, the murdered journalist, called for hmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the British-born Islamic militant behind his killing, to be executed in Pakistan.
"It is a very difficult and unpleasant experience for me because I never thought I would ask for somebody to get the death penalty, but in the case of Omar Sheikh I can't think of any reason to spare his life," said Pearl.
Sheikh, 30, was found guilty of masterminding the murder of Daniel Pearl, who worked for The Wall Street Journal, and was sentenced to death in July 2003 but has appealed against the verdict.
"He's doing fine in jail and keeps bragging that people are going to free him," said Pearl. Sheikh's execution has been postponed several times and she is afraid that the Pakistani authorities may lack the nerve to carry out his sentence.
Pearl, 36, is in no doubt that Sheikh organised her 38-year-old husband's killing, although he was not present at the execution. Daniel Pearl was filmed having his throat cut, possibly by Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, a senior Al-Qaeda terrorist now held by the Americans.
"If he is executed tomorrow I'm not going to be a happier person. But if Pakistan succeeds in carrying out the death penalty, it will be a strong stand against extremism and I'll know he won't be a threat to anyone again," Pearl added.
