The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court announced that lethal injection would be used in carrying out the death penalty throughout the province. Yunnan, in south-west China, became the first province to officially carry out death penalty by lethal injection, said Zhao Shijie, president of the court, adding that the move represents a milestone for the country's judicial administration. The Kunming Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan's capital city began researching the subject of lethal injections in May of 1996. Following thousands of laboratory trials, scientists invented a non-virulent drug which brings about immediate clinical death while inflicting no physiological pain.
