There are currently 38 people on death row in Armenia. The former Soviet state has been applying a moratorium on the death penalty since 1991, but continues to issue death sentences. Three [unidentified] people were sentenced to death in 2001.
All death row inmates are housed in the Nubarashen penitentiary.
Samvel Hovhanissian, the head of the penitentiary department of the Justice Ministry of Armenia, said conditios have improved greatly for inmates condemned to death. Instead of hourly walks per month, they are now allowed a walk every day.
Once in six months they are allowed to meet relatives. Inmates also receive parcels from home which contain non-perishable food, as instructed by the Justice Minister. The condemned persons may prepare food for themselves. They have TV and radio sets in their cells and if they like may use the library.
