Three people received the death penalty in Guangzhou city three people were sentenced to death by the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court for their role in the largest ecstasy and ice trafficking case in China. Six members of the same gang received life imprisonment. The gang allegedly produced and trafficked more than four million ecstasy pills, 3,000 kilograms (6,600 pounds) of ice and 800 kilograms of caffeine between 1997 and 2001. Most of the drugs were sold to South Africa and other overseas locales. The gang began producing and trafficking in 1993, and had production bases in southern China's Guangdong and Henan provinces. Transporting and possessing narcotics in China are serious crimes punishable by death if the amount of drugs trafficked is more than 50 grams of heroin or ice.
