It was reported that China executed two men extradited from neighboring Kyrgyzstan who were convicted of murdering a Chinese diplomat and his driver in the Central Asian country. In June 2002, the men stopped the car of diplomat Wang Jianping, who worked at the Chinese embassy in Bishkek, and gunned down Wang and his driver on a street in the Kyrgyz capital. The accused men -- Rahmutulla Islayil and Arken Yakuf -- both Chinese citizens were executed in the city of Urumqi in northwest China's Xinjiang region, Xinhua news agency said. Islayil and Yakuf, both natives of Urumqi and members of the Turkish-speaking Muslim Uighur minority, fled the scene after the killings but were later caught by Kyrgyz police. The men were extradited in July 2002 and sentenced to death in January 2004. No details of their trials were given. Their appeal was rejected. On March 25, a higher court ordered the executions. The report did not say when the men were executed but executions are normally carried out as soon as the order is handed down.
