three people were sentenced to death, in Bangladesh, for killing veterinarian Anil Sarker in Brahmanbaria in 2003. Judge M Hasan Imam of the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal, Chittagong, handed down the verdict on Abdul Haq alias Abu Mia, Md Sabur Khan and Md Manik Mia in a packed courtroom.
The court, however, acquitted five other accused -- Mamtaz Uddin Munshi, Abdur Rouf, Rezia Khatun, Dudhan Mia and Khokon Mia. According to the prosecution, the accused called Anil out of his house at Nasirnagar on the night of July 17, 2003 and strangled him in a bid to grab his landed property. Anil was the only son of his parents.
