two brothers convicted of robbing, murdering and then burning a banker in August 2001 were hanged at dawn at Swaqa Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre, according to official sources.
The two convicted men, identified by officials as Mohammad Jamil, 27, and his brother Sakher, 32, were sentenced to death by the Criminal Court in 2003 for robbing and murdering the assistant director of a bank in the Abu Nuseir area.
The two brothers' final request before being escorted to the gallows was “God's mercy and forgiveness,” an official who attended the execution told The Jordan Times.
Their executions bring the total number of people put to death in the Kingdom since the beginning of the year to nine.
The death sentence was upheld by the Court of Cassation in 2003 and endorsed by the Cabinet and a Royal Decree.
An execution committee comprising prison officials, a religious cleric, a government pathologist and other government officials attended the execution.
