Two key figures in Fiji's 2000 coup were to be charged with treason and could be sentenced to death following High Court rulings.
Former reporter Joe Nata, who acted as the spin doctor to coup leader George Speight, and Timoci Silatolu, a former MP whom Speight named as prime minister, will be formally arraigned on June 4.
The two, who earlier pleaded not guilty, launched legal arguments alleging the charge was unconstitutional, since as Fiji was a republic, the old British crime of treason no longer existed. But the Fiji Court of Appeal struck out the appeal.
