UAE: COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE IN MURDER CASE

In the UAE, the Fujairah Court of Appeal upheld the verdict of the Court of First Instance sentencing a foreman to death for the premeditated murder of his assistant, a judiciary official at the Fujairah court said.
Chief Judge Abdullah Al Salami presided over the hearing, the official added.
The official said that the case dated back to the end of 2010. The defendant, identified as M.Sh.M, and the victim, identified as R.A., got into an argument over a matter related to their work. Both workers were at a building under construction in Fujairah, where they worked, when the incident happened.
The two came to blows on the top floor of the building, and the foreman used both hands to push his assistant, resulting in the victim losing his balance and falling to his death, the official said.
The incident was initially reported to the Fujairah Police as an accident. The police were informed that the worker had fallen from the building, the official said.
The official added that M.Sh.M was arrested and referred to the Fujairah Public Prosecution for interrogation where he confessed to his crime.
The official said that the suspect claimed that he regretted having fought with the victim and that he had no intention to kill him.
The Court of First Instance, in a hearing held last November 27, sentenced M.Sh.M to death, the official said.
The official said that the court allowed the suspect to contact the victim's family to seek their pardon, but all his attempts were in vain.
