Laliyo Munirwa, Gopi Wako, Stephen Koire, Max Kulira and Patrick Muyaka were convicted of killing a herbalist, Haruna Mubere. They allegedly hacked the victim with machetes and set him ablaze.
The courtroom was moved into tears as several witnesses gave an account of how Mubere was killed. The incident took place in the victim's home in Nabirere, Iganga district, on September 27, 2001. The convicts accused Mubere of bewitching residents. Jinja resident judge Opio Aweri also sentenced to death Siraji Mukombe and Mohammed Muwoleka after convicting them of aggravated robbery. The two committed the offence on April 7, 2002 at Bugoba village in the Iganga district. The court heard that the two, armed with a rifle, broke into Laban Kyakulaga's residence, and assaulted him and his wife demanding money. The took off with sh100,000.
