Ugandan MPs on the joint committees of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and Defence and Internal Affairs recommended a mandatory death sentence for individuals who through terrorist acts cause the death of other people.
Individuals who aid or abet terrorist activities leading to the death of a person are also liable to a mandatory death sentence, the committees agreed.
The MPs however rejected a proposal by the minister of Internal Affairs Eriya Kategaya seeking a mandatory life sentence for individuals who through terrorist acts cause "grievous bodily harm" and "extensive damage" to others.
The joint committees were considering amendments to the Suppression of Terrorism Bill, 2001.
