A Maricopa County jury imposed the death penalty again Efren Medina. Medina, 35, hispanic, originally was convicted in 1995 of first-degree murder in the 1993 death of 71-year-old Carle Otis Hodge while trying to steal his car and then sentenced to death on May 16, 1996. Judge Brian Hauser of Maricopa County Superior Court reversed Medina's death sentence on Nov. 11, 2003 (see) on the basis of mental illness. A second trial to sentence him ended in a mistrial in 2008. The case went back to trial for a third time last month.
