In Torrance, Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold upheld the September 11 (see) jury's recommendation, and sentenced Barry Wendell Mosley to death. Mosley, 49, was convicted of 3 counts of 1st-degree murder for the April 17, 1999, killings of Shirley Austin, 54, and her 17-year-old daughter, Bessie Carter, and the June 7, 2000, slaying of Adrienne Reed, 29. All 3 were strangled, and Reed and the teenager were raped. Mosley also raped Carter, Reed and her then-8-year-old daughter, who survived the attack and testified against Mosley. He was arrested after his palm print was lifted from a bathroom counter. DNA later linked him to the slayings of Austin and Mooney. Mosley also was linked to the murder of an elderly neighbor when he was 17 years old, as well as the rape and beatings in South Los Angeles of at least 3 other women whose cases were unsolved until Mosley's DNA was entered in a law enforcement database.
