Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dava Tunis sentenced Tavares Calloway to death, following a Feb. 5 (see) jury’s 7-5 recommendation. Calloway, 31, black, received a death sentence for each of 5 victims. Looking to rob the victims, Calloway and his accomplice, Antonio Clark, had stormed an apartment in January 1997 where some drug dealers were living. Killed were Adolphus ``Tank'' Melvin, 27; Gary St. Charles, 22; Trenton Thomas, 26; Frederick McGuire, 31, and Melvin's visiting nephew, Derwin Bernard Copeland, 28. Clark, the accomplice, was a juvenile, and was sentenced to 8 life terms for his role in the crime.
