Gary Haugen, who was supposed to be executed on Dec. 6, is now criticising the governor who called for a reprieve on Tuesday. Gary Haugen was first sentenced to life in prison for the 1981 fatal beating of his ex-girlfriend's mother. He was transferred to death-row in 2007 after his participation in the brutal slaying of David Polin. Haugen is now critical of Governor John Kitzhaber's decision to call off his execution, saying that he "pulled a coward's move" and that he didn't have the guts to have him put to death. According to the Daily Mail, Kitzhaber claims that he called off the execution because Oregon's death penalty system is "compromised and inequitable". He says that he will not allow any executions in the state while he is in office. He also calls the system a system of "perversion of justice" since the state only executes people who volunteer for the death penalty. Haugen has waived all his legal challenges and says that he wants to be executed in protest of a justice system he calls broken. He is considering taking legal action to strike down Kitzhaber's reprieve. Haugen had previously praised the governor's criticism of the death penalty, but has since said that after further reflection that he pulled a "coward's move" by not executing him. He believes that the governor's own personal moral beliefs got in the way of the decision to execute him and should have followed the will of Oregon's voters who had voted to reinstate the death penalty. Oregon brought back the death penalty in 1984, and this was supposed to be the first execution in the state in 14 years.
