Larry Bill Elliott was executed by electric chair at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, becoming the first U.S. inmate to die by electrocution in over a year. Elliott, 60, white, was convicted in 2003 of the January 2, 2001 shooting deaths of 25-year-old Dana Thrall and 30-year-old Robert Finch, both white. Prosecutors said Elliott killed the couple to win the love of former stripper and escort Rebecca Gragg, who was involved in a bitter custody dispute with the man who was killed. Elliott was given a sentence of life in prison without parole for Finch's murder. Of the 35 death penalty states, 7 Southern states still offer electrocution. 2 others allow it only if lethal injection is deemed unconstitutional. The last person executed by electrocution in the U.S. was James Earl Reed, who put to death in South Carolina in June 2008. Virginia's last electrocution was in 2006. Elliott becomes the 3rd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Virginia and the105th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982. Elliott becomes the 46th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1182nd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1982.
