VIETNAM. COURT SENTENCES MAN TO DEATH OVER DRUGS

the People's Court in the central Nghe An Province, Vietnam, sentenced to death Tran Van Hoi for trading and trafficking heroin from Laos to Vietnam. Hoi was caught with 59.2 grams of heroin together with Nguyen Viet Luyen and Pham Van Hung in December 2000. However, only Luyen and Hung were arrested, and Hoi escaped. After escaping the police net, Hoi was again arrested, along with nine others, for trafficking and trading large amounts of heroin and methamphetamine tablets from Laos to Vietnam. Hoi was also fined VND100 million.
Among nine others arrested, one person received a life-sentence and a few others were given jail sentences of between 2 and 20 years imprisonment.
