Wong Hoi-bun, a Hong Kong businessman who killed and dismembered a Philippine Chinese man that he had kidnapped from a Shenzhen hotel with two accomplices on February 19, 1995, was executed in Shenzhen, China. The victim, surnamed Choi, was killed before the gang called his relatives demanding payment of a ransom. Wong had allegedly instructed the gang to dismember the body and bury it. Although the hostage was dead, Wong still called the man's relatives and asked for 2 million yuan, Xinhua reported. The trio fled to Shanghai at the end of that month and continued to call Choi's relatives. But the victim's family insisted they would not pay a ransom until they had spoken to him. Wong was finally arrested in November 2000. The whereabouts of his alleged accomplices was not mentioned in the Xinhua report. Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court had earlier sentenced Wong to death and ordered his assets to be confiscated. Wong later launched a failed appeal in Guangdong Higher People's Court. Guangdong People's Supreme Court approved the death sentence and ordered Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court to carry it out.
