Yao Ting, a local Shanghai man in his twenties, was given the death penalty by the Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court, for his role in an arson attack that killed two. Court officials said that in September 2001, Yao's girlfriend broke up with him and had rejected his request of resuming their relationship. It was alleged that later Yao found out that the woman, surnamed Yang, was living with a new boyfriend. Enraged, he decided to take revenge. In the early morning of October 30, 2001, Yao dumped gasoline in the corridor outside Yang's apartment in a residential building on Yuhang Road and ignited a fire. Two neighbours died.
