A court in Bangladesh sentenced five persons to death, four to life in jail and two others to five years rigorous imprisonment for murdering a youth in broad daylight in 1999.
The condemned convicts are Milton, Masud, Liton, Devij and Shahed of Soyandhangorha village on the outskirts of the district town of Sirajganj.
The lifers are Arif, Rubel, Shahnur and Mithu of the same village.
All the accused from the same village were in the dock, with security beefed up in the court, when the judge pronounced the verdict in the sensational murder case.
The prosecution argued that after failing to extort a big amount of toll from Hilton, son of Monjur Morshed Khan of the village, the convicted persons enticed Hilton to Davij's house at 11am on March 26, 1999.
"As soon as he arrived, the hoodlums started chopping him with Chinese axe indiscriminately," according to the case statement.
