A young man, Rakimuddin Rakib, was sentenced to death by the special court on Women and Child Repression for throwing acid on a housewife and her son.Rakib, who was employed as a tutor by Afsar Uddin at his house in Barigaon Barhartek village, had tried to sexually assault Afsar's wife, Peara Begum. She brought the matter to the notice of her husband, who fired Rakib.
On December 17, 1998, Rakib, furious at losing his job, went to the house and threw acid on Peara Begum and her son, Awlad Hossain, causing both severe burn injuries.On hearing the verdict, Rakib fainted in the court dock.
