A sessions court sentenced to death two sisters who abducted infants from various places in Maharashtra in the 1990s, forced them to commit thefts and subsequently killed them mercilessly.
The verdict was pronounced in a jam-packed courtroom by sessions judge G L Yedke who ordered that Renuka Kiran Shinde, 27, and Seema Mohan Gavit, 25, shall be hanged till death. The women had no expression on their faces when the verdict was delivered.
Immediately after, a group of 70 children in the court went to the public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and offered him sugar in appreciation of his efforts to handle this case. More than 2000 persons, gathered outside the court in the busy locality of Bhausinghji road, raised slogans in Marathi saying 'Renuka Ani Seema La Phashi Jhalich Pahije' (Renuka and Seema must be hanged to death).
After the verdict, the parents of victims raised slogans of 'Nyay Milala' (we have got justice). The parents surrounded Nikam when he emerged from the court and congratulated him.This is the fourth verdict in the country that has sentenced women to death.
