A remand prisoner held his cellmate in an arm lock and then smothered him because the youth had messed up their cell and refused to clean it up
A remand prisoner held his cellmate in an arm lock and then smothered him because the youth had messed up their cell and refused to clean it up.
During the fatal attack in Cell B 141 at Queenstown Remand Prison on August 10, 2001, a furious Kanesan Ratnam slackened his grip after he noticed blood oozing out of Shankar Suppiahmaniam's mouth.
But that did not stop the 35-year-old detainee from choking Shankar. He tied a towel around the teen's neck and pulled its ends. All this happened while the 19-year-old was lying facedown on the floor, motionless. Kanesan then smothered Shankar with a blanket.
Kanesan was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death.
At the time of the murder, Shankar was being held in custody, accused of committing rape, unnatural sex offences, abduction and impersonating a public servant. Kanesan was in remand on a rape charge.
