A Thai man facing the death sentence for murdering a taxi driver in Singapore has little chance of avoiding execution, a senior labour official said.
The Thai embassy in Singapore has petitioned the president to commute the death sentence given to Natthapong Khwan-on, the permanent secretary for labour Irawat Chanprasert said.
The consideration process was expected to take about two months, but Natthapong, 25, was unlikely to get a reprieve. The court set March 6 for the execution.
Natthapong, from Uttaradit, was convicted in November 2001 of the murder of a 65-year-old taxi driver and theft of his mobile phone and wallet.
The Singapore High Court rejected Natthapong's defence that he was mentally ill at the time of the offence.
